If the Law in My State Designates Who Should Make My Health Care Decisions If I Have Not Named an HCP Agent, Why Should I Go to the Trouble of Picking an HCP Agent?

Naming an HCP agent assures that someone you trust and best knows your wishes will speak on your behalf to ensure that your preferences are followed if you are unable to express them. Leaving the designation of your surrogate decision-maker up to the law may result in having someone you do not want in that role. If you are worried that your HCP agent may become ill or otherwise is incapable of acting on your behalf, you may want to designate an alternative HCP agent who also understands your wishes, rather than leaving decision-making to the next person on a list.
